In the year 2284 Maxon sends Recon Squad Artemis led by Paladin Brandis to investigate rumors coming from the commonwealth of an Institute, all members but Brandis are KIA. Maxon gains permission from the West coast who had hated Lyons' splinter faction and appoint him Elder. Eventually the young Arthur Maxon steps up and leads the Brotherhood united, the remnants once more feel at home while Lyons' supporters most likely are killed, or start an outcast group of their own. Lyons dies shortly after defeating the threat of the Enclave once and for all at Adams AFB and his daughter Sarah Lyons takes his place as elder but her reign is short lived as the outcasts gain influence and after her death a long line of ineffective leaders come and go. This caused a rift in the BOS as the Outcasts were formed, Lyons successfully aided the people of the Capital wasteland while the outcasts primarily focused on recovering lost and dangerous old world tech.
Owyn Lyons was sent alongside a large attachment of BOS personnel east with the goal of establishing contact on the east coast, shortly after the battle of The Pitt Lyons became Elder of this new chapter and splintered off from western ideology. There are still some factions of the BOS around in the West and Mid-West of the country, but much of the West Coast BOS was destroyed by the New California Republic during it's expansion. The Brotherhood of Steel was a Quasi-Military faction created by AWOL US Army Captain Roger Maxon who became the first Elder of the Brotherhood.
